Agricultural pest control with CRISPR-based gene drive: time for public debate: Should we use gene drive for pest control?

چکیده
G ene drive based on the CRISPR/Cas-9 gene editing system is a powerful technology that promotes the inheritance of the gene drive tool itself via sexual reproduction and can therefore spread quickly through a population. It holds great potential for public health and humanitarian purposes, such as reducing the burden of vector-borne diseases like malaria. Here, we discuss another potential application of CRISPR-based gene drive, namely the control of pest species to increase crop production. We argue that gene drive-based pest control strategies should receive more attention from policymakers and the public given their enormous potential impact on the environment, their easy accessibility, and the current dearth of regulations.

متن کاملUsing CRISPR-based gene drive for agriculture pest control.
S tephen Young describes an alternative or complementary emerging strategy for controlling pests in agriculture: the use of artificial intelligence and robotic machines to physically destroy individual pests [1]. He emphasizes that, while genetics focuses on internal modifications of pests, such technological approaches rely on external manipulation. Robotic technology seems an attractive appro...
متن کاملCRISPR-based gene drive in agriculture will face technical and governance challenges.
C ourtier-Orgogozo et al [1] recently called for public debate about the use of CRISPR-based gene drive (GD) in agricultural pest management. We agree that this use of GD deserves specific attention, given that it would pose unique challenges to economic, social, ecological, and regulatory systems. However, many details in the report are oversimplified or imprecise; GD will likely face greater ...

Control of biological populations is an ongoing challenge in many fields, including agriculture, biodiversity, ecological preservation, pest control, and the spread of disease. In some cases, such as insects that harbor human pathogens (e.g., malaria), elimination or reduction of a small number of species would have a dramatic impact across the globe. Given the recent discovery and development ...
متن کاملUnintended consequences of 21st century technology for agricultural pest management.
C ourtier-Orgogozo et al [1] argue that public debate and better governance are needed to properly control the use of gene editing for controlling pests in agriculture. They are correct in their assessment that this “could lead to multiple and uncoordinated releases of gene drives into the wild, which is likely to cause unpredictable ecological disturbances with farreaching consequences”. Howev...
